TrashOut's 2020 in review

The year 2020 was challenging for all of us but we still managed to do some good. First of all, we want to thank you, our users for being active citizens who care about the environment. Thank you, our partners, for great cooperations, and for sharing our vision of a cleaner world.

Our year in numbers

There were 11,000 reports of illegal dumpsites recorded via our applications in 80 countries. This means all together 62,000 illegal dumpsites were reported since we started this journey. The strongest countries were Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Throughout the year 20,000 users used our mobile apps and 17,000 used our website and web app. We also experienced some great media coverage from Forbes and Slovak Spectator .

Key updates of our applications

1/ We added new languages

We know that local issues require a bit of local approach and that is why we added a couple of new languages - Romanian, Hungarian, Portuguese and Italian. TrashOut is now available in 11 languages. We are ready to support countries and partners that have long-term plans with mapping and add your language as well.

2/ Edit your location manually during reporting

We are aware that your GPS accuracy is not always perfect. Especially when you go to nature, or when you are in more rural areas. That is why we implemented the possibility to edit location manually similarly to when you are ordering an Uber (available on web and android, iOS coming soon).

3/ Adding comments

From the last year, all users and organizations can leave a comment on the specific report. This way they can let other users know what is the upcoming process with the reported dumpsite or if there was an issue with finding the dumpsite. Good thing is that all users that previously updated or commented on this report will be notified via email and push notification. This way, every time there is an update on the report you follow, you will be notified with fresh information.

4/ Reporting as an organization and a dedicated landing page

Many countries that use our application also have laws in place saying who should clean up the reported dumpsite. On the other hand, in many countries, it is NGOs who are doing the job. We understand that if we want those reports to be cleaned up we need to make the job of these organizations easier. That is why we implemented the possibility to report, update and comment as an organization. This allows organizations to appoint multiple users as managers that can act in their name. We also put together a landing page that explains why your organization should use TrashOut and how to make the most of it.

5/ Stability

We worked on our stability issues and are happy to report that throughout 2020 we were available 99.962% of the time. Thanks to this you can rely on TrashOut being there when you stumble across the dump you want to report or you need to find the nearest recycling bin or centre.

1/ Global partner: World Cleanup Day

This fantastic worldwide initiative uses TrashOut as the mapping tool . Together we organize mapping competitions among countries. We encourage them to both report new dumpsites, update old reports and of course clean them up. Especially with the pandemic, it was great to engage citizens in the activity that can be done solo or in a small group keeping safety precautions. In the end, a couple of countries stood out and were awarded a certificate during Clean Conference 2021.

2/ Slovak partners: Zelená linka and Upracme Slovensko

We are glad to say we have strong partners in our home country. Zelená linka (translation: Green line) is an initiative of the Ministry of Environment of Slovak Republic. It is a team that takes care of all the reports about environmental issues from citizens. It finds the responsible local municipality or office and oversees that those reports are delivered and solved.

Since summer 2020 they have been sending reports made by Slovak users via TrashOut to the right authority which resulted in the big growth of reports marked as cleaned. They regularly comment on the reports they started to deal with which show TrashOut users that their activity is noticed and will have a result.

We also partner with Upracme Slovensko , NGO that organizes national cleanups twice a year. Together we organize challenges to engage Slovak citizens in both mapping and cleaning. Top users are rewarded with local eco-friendly products.

4/ Romanian partner: Let's do it Romania with their ticketing platform 4B

Let's do it Romani a , an organization doing cleanups for years in Romania started to heavily promote the solution that combines TrashOut and their ticketing platform called 4B. This solution allows them to automatically send reports made via TrashOut to local authorities. The official petition in .pdf is generated and send to the authorities with the ask to act. Their volunteers then update the information back to TrashOut so users are notified about the new status of their report. In 5 months they managed to send 1,700 notifications to local authorities and 225 of those were successfully cleaned, which means 2,300 tons of waste were collected.

5/ Hungarian partner: Plastic Cup with a project to clean Tisza river

Plastic Cup is a Hungarian organization that leads Erasmus project 5 COUNTRIES 1 RIVER (5in1) project implements cooperation between the countries sharing the Tisza River Basin - Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia. The project develops effective education and training activities focused on mobilizing young schoolchildren (aged 6-18). Slovakia is represented by TrashOut and our app will be used to map contaminated areas around the Tisza river. This is a long term project lasting till August 2023.

6/ Global partner: Omdena with a project applying machine learning to predict illegal dumpsites

Omdena is a platform that is enabling impact organizations with agile and ethical AI development. During the 2 months long project its volunteers helped tackle the issue of building machine learning models on illegal dumping to see if there are any patterns that can help understand what causes illegal dumping, predict potential dumpsites, and eventually help to avoid them. TrashOut's data were enriched by data from other sources like Foursquare or World Bank indicator. This challenge finished with a demo day where participants presented a couple of concepts. We want to thank also all the partners that supported us financially - World Cleanup Day, Plastic Cup and Let's do it Romania. Thank you, all individuals and companies that donated in 2020. We are glad that companies like AWS, Canva, Google and others allow NGOs to use their services with big discounts or for free which helps us to fulfill our vision.

Plans for 2021

During this year we plan to implement a couple of features that our partners requested. The biggest one will be offline reporting which we believe will increase adoption mainly in developing countries. We are ready to onboard and support more partners and welcome more users who want to contribute to systemic change. Svetový čistiaci deň 2020: Najväčšia upratovacia akcia opäť aj na Slovensku

Snaha o prostredie bez odpadkov a čiernych skládok pokračuje aj tento september.

Rok 2020 nám síce neustále hádže polená pod nohy, no naša vízia o čistom Slovensku bez odpadkov zostáva rovnaká. Preto sme sa rozhodli pokračovať v našich aktivitách a zorganizovať ďalší ročník Svetového čistiaceho dňa. Ten sa primárne uskutoční v sobotu 19. septembra, zapojiť sa však môžeš kedykoľvek v priebehu daného týždňa či po ňom.

Ako to celé vzniklo

Myšlienka celonárodných upratovacích akcií vznikla pôvodne v roku 2008 v Estónsku, kedy hnutie Let’s Do It spoločne s 50 000 dobrovoľníkmi upratalo za jeden deň celú krajinu od nelegálnych skládok. Tento nápad si postupne prevzali krajiny takmer po celom svete a od roku 2018 sa organizuje tzv. „ World Cleanup Day “ (slov. Svetový čistiaci deň), v rámci ktorého sa upratuje spoločne v jeden deň.

Vďaka pôsobeniu občianskeho združenia Upracme Slovensko v medzinárodnom hnutí Let’s Do It World sa naša krajina už tretí rok zapája do Svetového čistiaceho dňa. Počas uplynulých ročníkov upratovaní pod záštitou Upracme Slovensko spojilo sily viac ako 9000 dobrovoľníkov, ktorí vyzbierali dokopy približne 150 ton odpadu v 131 lokalitách Slovenska.

Súčasná situácia a vyhliadky na jeseň

Tento rok bude iniciatíva Svetový čistiaci deň poznačená pandémiou nového koronavírusu COVID-19. Upratovania predbežne plánujeme zorganizovať klasicky v skupinách, avšak je možné, že lokálne sa budú musieť podujatia prispôsobiť epidemiologickej situácii a nariadeniam hlavného hygienika SR. V prípade, že by takéto upratovanie znamenalo priveľké riziko, odporúčame jednotlivcom zobrať si na prechádzku so sebou vrece, do ktorého vyzbierajú odpadky a môžu nás spomenúť na Facebooku či Instagrame cez označenie @Upracme_slovensko. Okrem upratovaní sa jednotlivci môžu zapojiť aj do označovania čiernych skládok prostredníctvom našej partnerskej mobilnej aplikácie TrashOut . Cez túto platformu bolo doposiaľ nahlásených na Slovensku 7800 skládok. Len tento rok pribudlo približne tisíc hlásení skládok. Samozrejme, pri všetkých aktivitách treba myslieť na použitie ochranných pomôcok, dezinfekcie a dodržiavanie odstupov.

Spoločne dokážeme viac

Svetový čistiaci deň sa nezaobíde bez nadšených dobrovoľníkov a organizátorov upratovaní. Či už zastupuješ organizáciu, firmu, školu, obec alebo si jednotlivec, zaregistruj svoje upratovanie na webovej stránke Upracme Slovensko . Budeme tak mať lepší prehľad, ktoré časti Slovenska sa zapojili a po upratovaní použijeme vyzbierané dáta na komunikáciu problému nelegálnych skládok so štátnymi inštitúciami.

6 weeks until World Cleanup Day

2020 has thrown plenty of hurdles in all of our way, but we are happy to announce that World Cleanup Day will go forward despite the challenges. This year will be different, no doubt, adjusting to each and every country’s circumstances, but the battle for a cleaner and healthier world will still go on.

Therefore we have listed the ways how you and your organisation can participate at World Cleanup Day on 19th of September:

Group cleanups

Cleanups will be organized where possible and allowed. Organizers, with the permission from local governments, may gather people for cleanups with recommendation to restrict the number of participants and to spread cleanup locations out so as to avoid people coming in close contact with too many attendees. Individual cleanups

As an alternative for large gatherings, people can be invited to clean their surrounding areas with their families or individually.

Digital cleanups

If you find you are restricted in your country, or the situation doesn’t look favourable for traditional cleanups, we propose a cleanup you can do within your own home - digital cleanup. Find out more about digital cleanup here and here are materials on how to organise it within your organisation.

Best Mappers win prizes!

Before World Cleanup Day, you can use our TrashOut app to contribute to the success of World Cleanup Day by gathering valuable data about waste for the cleanup day and beyond. If we know where the trash is, we can do something about it, isn't that right?

This is also a great volunteering opportunity that you can propose for your members and network in times of Covid-19, because mapping can be done any time and any where - while you jog, walk or hike around your neighbourhood or in the nature.

There are special prizes for best mappers, too. There are 3 categories and each winner of the category wins a ticket to the Let's Do It World Annual conference with travel costs covered.

Best Mapper - for this category, we award the country that maps the highest number of new trash points during the duration of the challenge.
Best Mapping Manager - we will track how many of the existing 'not cleaned' trash points already exist for each country at the beginning of the challenge. Then we will monitor how many of them have been updated with a new picture and status by the end of the challenge. They do not need to be updated as cleaned, just updated to specify whether the waste is still there.
Best Cleaner - two weeks after WCD 2020 are given to update all the trash points you cleaned during the World Cleanup Day event. For this prize, we will compare the percentage of 'Cleaned' reports one week before WCD with the percentage of 'Cleaned' reports two weeks after WCD. We will monitor the change in the percentage of cleaned reports, which means that all countries with at least 50 trash point reports can join in.

No time to waste. Start acting now to celebrate Earth Day

During these hard times, when the virus has changed our daily lives we have a chance to reflect on our lifestyles. We are stuck at home, which means we also produce more waste at home. This situation gives us an opportunity to see how much waste do we produce as households but also to implement measures to treat this waste correctly. Earth day is celebrated already for 50 years and during this day many cleaning and educational events are organized all around the world. This year is different. This year we have to take individual action. What are those small changes that you will implement starting this Earth Day, April 22nd?

According to the article published on the website of the World Economic Forum, we consume about 5 grams of micro plastic a week. That’s more than 250 grams a year – equivalent to a small plastic jar. Plastic is already everywhere and thus we consume it by drinking water or even having a beer.

Plastic is not good for us and is harming the environment through all the stages of its production. 99% of plastic begins as fossil fuel and greenhouse gases are emitted at each stage of the plastic lifecycle. Moreover, producers often claim that their packaging is recyclable. That is nice, but that does not mean it will be recycled and we consumers often do not think about what happens with the packaging after we consume what we bought. Plastic packaging represents 40% of all plastics produced and is typically single-use.

Global production of plastics is growing 3,5% a year and if plastic was a country, it would be the planet’s fifth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

Globally, of all of the plastic ever created, only 9% has been recycled. The World Economic Forum estimated that more than 90% of plastic is never recycled and 8 million metric tons of plastic waste are dumped into the oceans every year. The latest data, according to a 2018 report in The Guardian, suggests that 12.7m tons of plastic end up in our waters every year.

So what happens with waste that is not recycled? Most of it ends on either legal or illegal dumpsites. It is estimated that out of all dumpsites 20% is illegal in the European Union and almost 50% in Africa. With the business as usual scenario dumpsites will account for 8-10% of the global Greenhouse Gas emissions in 2025.

There are already many initiatives fighting this issue on the national or international level. States are passing new regulations, companies try to innovate their value chains, but we need to be faster. One great example is the European Union's ban on single-use plastics. Under the new rules, single-use plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks and cotton buds will be banned by 2021.

The question is how can you, citizen, contribute to the cleaner planet now? What is simple enough that you can implement it in your daily lives tomorrow?

1. Stop using single-use plastics

We use a lot of single-use plastic and sometimes it is just a matter of changing simple things. Do you really need that straw with your drink? Could you bring your own bag when shopping? Can you buy your own keep-cup or have a coffee at a coffee place and not for takeaway?

2. When you go for a walk, pick a few pieces of litter

So many people already do this and it is amazing. When you see litter you just pick it up. More people do this, faster we clean up the planet. When combined with jogging it is called plogging, new trendy 'sport'. This is also a great way how to educate kids. We guarantee if you pick only one piece of litter that was not yours you will remember forever not to throw away trash where it does not belong.

3. Report and update illegal dumps via TrashOut

People tend to imagine a huge pile of trash when they hear 'illegal dumpsite'. The opposite is true. With TrashOut mobile and web application, you can report illegal dumpsite that would fit into a bag. Basically you should report everything that is not possible to clean up during a short everyday walk. If you find a few pieces of litter, apply activity number 2. Already 55 000 reports were made via TrashOut application. Thanks to cooperation with World Cleanup Day this data helps to raise awareness and speed up to the process of cleaning those dumps.

Over 20 million people in 180 countries and territories joined World Cleanup Day 2019

Let’s Do It World, the organisation behind the event, has confirmed. This constitutes 0,3% of the world’s population making an impact and creating awareness of the global waste problem. Let’s Do It World’s ultimate goal is to involve 5% of the world’s population in cleanups. This is the tipping point to create a shift in mindsets and transition in societies – to create real and lasting change.

“I am thankful to all the people and organisations across the globe who participated and expressed their concern about the future of our planet. World Cleanup Day is an amazing tool to bring together all sectors of society to make the change happen. The transition into a sustainable world can only be achieved through deep and trustful collaboration on local, regional and global level,” said Heidi Solba, the President of Let’s Do It World.

World Cleanup Day 2019 begun in the early hours of 21 September 2019 when people on the Pacific island of Fiji started to clean their beaches. Cleanups followed the sun and swept across the planet, ending 24 hours later in Hawaii.

One country that shone brightly was Kyrgyzstan. This Central Asian country involved nearly 10% of their population in World Cleanup Day 2019, including local celebrities, government officials, partners and influencers. The country, who attracted the biggest number of participants, was Indonesia with over 9 million people. Mobilising this number of people across hundreds of islands, working with local authorities and relying on sub-team leaders was indeed a challenge. Similarly in Brazil , Teoria Verde and Limpa Brazil managed to get 1200 cities across the vast country involved and attracted over 320 thousand people to participate in cleanups, making Brazil one of the success stories of 2019.

Another success story was Mozambique , where over 350 thousand people participated, including thousands of schools across the country. The team in Mozambique, like in many other countries, works throughout the year to educate the younger generations on the harms of littering and improper waste management.

Cleanups were also organised in some very challenging circumstances. Afghanistan, Iran and Syria , which may not seem like the safest places for public gatherings, saw hundreds of thousands of participants come out to clean thanks to the local cleanup leaders working in unison with the local governments to make sure everyone is safe.

In fact, government involvement in a number of countries helped the local cleanup leaders involve very large numbers of people. 1,6 million people participated in the countrywide cleanup in India. Organising World Cleanup Day was supported by the Swachh Bharat Mission, launched by the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The neighbouring Pakistan engaged a whopping 2,5 million people in cleanups across the country on World Cleanup Day. Let’s Do It World’s country leader in Cambodia has also opted to work closely with the government and this has paid off – 800 thousand people participated.

Another country, who worked with government and who actually started off World Cleanup Day 2019 a week before 21 September, was Bulgaria . The Bulgarian cleanup is organised by the country’s national broadcaster and they attracted 433 thousand people to come out and pick up trash.

Let’s Do It Italy , the team behind mobilising over 330 thousand people in the country, very appropriately included the fashion industry, which is so often scapegoated for various environmental problems. An eco fashion show took place on World Cleanup day and was a part of Milan Fashion Week, bringing the issues around fast fashion to the public eye.

Organisations from various other industries also got involved, including the insurance giant Allianz and the affordable sporting goods chain Decathlon.

The next World Cleanup Day will take place on 19 September 2020. However, before getting down to organising the next World Cleanup Day, the country teams, partners and supporters of Let’s Do It World will meet in Tallinn, Estonia from 23 to 26 January 2020 to collectively decide on the direction the organisation and World Cleanup Day will take in 2020.

World Cleanup Day 2019 was hosted by Let’s Do It Kosovo, who organised a call centre, international media centre and a live broadcast from Pristina on 21 September. World Cleanup Day 2019 global coordination is supported by the Government of Kosovo.

World Cleanup Day is attracting an increasing number of individuals, who seek opportunities to positively contribute to a cleaner planet, but hundreds of companies and organisations, too. UN Environment, UN Habitat, Fridays For Future, Allianz, Toyota, Fujitsu, Nielsen, Amadeus, Peace One Day, Trash Hero, Trash Out, Civicus, Earth Day Network and many more joined cleanup actions across the globe amongst others.

“ We are immensely thankful to partners, who helped make World Cleanup Day happen and also encouraged their employees and stakeholders to participate in the biggest one-day action against waste,” said Solba.

World Cleanup Day is the largest single peacetime civic action against waste in human history, aimed at raising awareness of the scale of the global mismanaged waste crisis threatening the environment and the lives of millions of people and living beings. Slovensko sa po roku opäť zapojilo do globálnej environmentálnej akcie Svetový čistiaci deň

V sobotu 21. septembra 2019 sa stovky Slovákov a Sloveniek už druhýkrát zapojili do celosvetovej výzvy na čistejšie životné prostredie s názvom Svetový čistiaci deň. Je to deň, kedy milióny dobrovoľníkov po celom svete spoja sily, aby spoločne upratali čo najviac odpadu a čiernych skládok v mestách i prírode. Zároveň má upriamiť pozornosť na problém so znečistením. Týka sa nás všetkých, bez ohľadu na kultúrne, ideologické alebo politické rozdiely.

Tento rok sa s upratovaním začalo v Oceánii, pokračovalo Áziou,Európou, Afrikou a neobišlo dokonca ani Arktídu. Ďalšie dobrovoľnícke akcie sa presunuli na americký kontinent. Zozbierať dáta z takého ohromného upratovania je veľmi náročné, výsledky budú známe až o niekoľko dní. Už teraz však vieme, že sa do iniciatívy zapojilo viac ako 18 miliónov dobrovoľníkov zo 179 krajín.

História Svetového čistiaceho dňa má korene v Estónsku, kde sa hnutiu Let´s Do It podarilo zmobilizovať 50 000 Estóncov a za jediný deň vyčistili krajinu od všetkých evidovaných čiernych skládok. Táto myšlienka sa postupne rozšírila do okolitých krajín a každým rokom počet dobrovoľníkov i zapojených krajín narastá .

Upracme Slovensko

Rok 2018 bol pre Slovensko prvým, kedy sa oficiálne zapojilo do Svetového čistiaceho dňa. Do upratovania sa vtedy zapojilo približne 550 dobrovoľníkov z 20 obcí a vyzbieralo sa viac ako 3,8 ton odpadu. Tohtoročné upratovanie ešte úplne neskončilo a zber dát takisto prebieha, no už teraz vieme, že počet dobrovoľníkov a obcí vzrástol niekoľkonásobne – naše počítadlo ukazuje už viac ako 3500 dobrovoľníkov v 65 lokalitách a približne 60 ton vyzbieraného odpadu. Denne prichádzajú nové reporty od lokálnych organizátorov, preto budú tieto čísla ešte aktualizované. Lokálne čistenia organizovali jednotlivci, občianske združenia, obce, firmy či školy. Za myšlienkou zapojenia Slovenska do najväčšej čistiacej akcie na svete stojí partička mladých ľudí z občianskeho združenia Upracme Slovensko. Aj keď každý z nich pochádza z iného kúta Slovenska a iného pracovného odvetvia, spája ich záujem o čistejšie prostredie a udržateľný spôsob života.

Veľkou podporou pri organizácii podujatia bol hlavný partner – spoločnosť Redox, ktorá vo vybraných mestách a školách pomohla s materiálnym vybavením a občerstvením pre dobrovoľníkov, mediálni partneri Rádio Rebeca, našeBio-Eko.sk, biznisto a ďalší. Vďaka tiež patrí lokálnym spoločnostiam, ktoré riešia odpadové hospodárstvo a pomohli nám s odvozom vyzbieraného odpadu. Upratovanie by sa organizovalo ťažko bez podpory zástupcov miest a obcí, ktorí akciu ochotne podporili.

Lokálni partneri sú uvedení v jednotlivých upratovacích udalostiach na Facebooku. Poďakovanie patrí najmä všetkým účastníkom, ktorí venovali svoj voľný čas a úsilie, aby urobili naše Slovensko o niečo čistejšie.

Evidencia problémových oblastí a nelegálneho odpadu

Na Slovensku bolo nahlásených vyše 7 tisíc, z toho 750 od začiatku tohto roku. Mnoho skládok bolo už vyčistených. Na trasách Upracme Slovensko dobrovoľníci našli 43 skládok, pričom 32 bolo uprataných. Najväčšiu časť odpadu tvorili plasty - najmä fľaše a obaly z výrobkov, drobný stavebný odpad ale našli sa aj pneumatiky, detské hračky, umývadlo, nástroje na grilovanie a iné kuriozity.

Plány do budúcna

Svetový čistiaci deň 2019 sa konal v rovnaký týždeň ako Celosvetový klimatický štrajk. Problematika s odpadom je úzko prepojená s klimatickými zmenami, ktorým ako ľudstvo čelíme. Konkrétne činy musíme žiadať od našich politických lídrov, ale zároveň ich každý musíme implementovať do vlastného života. Aj to je poslaním Svetového čistiaceho dňa – pri pohľade na množstvo odpadu, ktorý sa vyzbieral, sa možno zamyslíme nad udržateľnejšími alternatívami a uvedomíme si hodnotu vecí okolo nás.

Cieľom občianskeho združenia Upracme Slovensko do budúcna je určite rozšíriť upratovanie do viacerých obcí a doplniť ho o edukačné aktivity, ktoré by občanom pomohli lepšie poznať tento problém a možnosti jeho riešenia.

Trash mapping – an innovative way to clean the world

Let’s Do It World (LDIW) is a global organisation focused on finding solutions to this situation through the use of innovative technology, training leaders and a massive global citizen action called World Cleanup Day. In 2018, more than 17 million people in 157 countries joined cleanups in their communities. The movement is now getting ready for World Cleanup Day 2019 on September 21st.

LDIW believes that technology in the hands of active citizens can be part of the solution for a sustainable planet. Locating waste in places where it shouldn’t be and figuring out why it is there is paramount, but the data is also an integral part of organising World Cleanup Day. While some waste can be tackled using AI algorithms and already existing data, the part that ends up in harder to locate places needs to be found by active citizens. Data on trashpoints gives organisers in each location an overview of the work ahead, allows them to allocate the resources needed and plan logistics for community cleanups.

But the use of data goes much further than simply organising a cleanup. It can be used for cross-sector research on solving issues linked with waste. In 2018, Tanzania mapped more than 20,000 trashpoints in 4 days. Detailed mapping was done in the capital Dar Es Salaam to find out how waste affects the spread of malaria. During flooding seasons waste clogs up the drainage, which in turn creates ponds for mosquitoes to spread. Data from mapping waste can be used to see patterns: how the waste moves, when and where it reappears. This knowledge allows country leaders to approach policy makers and assess which area to focus their efforts on.

Kadri Maripuu, Head of Mapping at Let’s Do It World explained: “Through citizen science, people share and contribute to data monitoring and collection programs. Engaging citizens in changing the current situation of our world and providing the necessary tools that will help them contribute to science helps anyone to be a participant for a global change. This brings the feeling of belonging while the collected data can be used on local and global level. Currently we don’t have enough data to approach the mismanaged waste situation globally. Mapping helps us to get closer to this global understanding.”

This year’s waste mapping campaign for World Cleanup Day starts on the 1st of August and continues to September. During this time LDIW calls all citizens and interested groups who want to contribute to a cleaner world to find the waste in their area and map it.

Let’s Do It World has partnered with TrashOut for WCD 2019 in order to provide all mappers with an easy-to-use smartphone and web app for mapping waste. Lucia Kelnarová, Project Manager of TrashOut said: “World Cleanup Day is an amazing event and we are excited that TrashOut app will be powering this event with technology and data. If we get data about the magnitude of the waste management problem, we can then measure our real contribution to a cleaner world. Mapping is super easy and even a fun activity that has great importance in this movement.”

World Cleanup Day is promising to be bigger than ever this September. Cleanup actions will take place globally on September 21st with millions joining the action. All individuals, groups, organisations and companies are welcome to join the mapping and cleanup actions around the world.

Vytvorili sme návod pre obce ako pracovať s TrashOut

Prostredníctvom TrashOut bolo na Slovensku zmapovaných viac ako 6 tisíc skládok, z toho viac ako 1 tisíc bolo označených ako vyčistených. TrashOut sa používa vo viac ako 100 krajinách a bolo cez neho nahlásených už 46 tisíc skládok. Tieto hlásenia však nič neznamenajú, pokiaľ nepríde k vyčisteniu daných miest. Tie sú väčšinou čistené buď dobrovoľníkmi počas akcií ako je napríklad aj Upracme (si) Slovensko alebo ich dajú vyčistiť priamo obce.

Práve pre obce sme nachystali návod ako pracovať s platformou TrashOut , aby došlo k rýchlejšiemu odprataniu. Tento návod však môže byť užitočný aj pre jednotlivcov, či dobrovoľnícke organizácie.

Prečo sa ako obec zapojiť do používania TrashOut?

Zbieranie dát

Vďaka dátam z aplikácie sa o skládke dozviete rýchlejšie. Zároveň môžete pravidelným používaním odsledovať problémové oblasti a navrhnúť nápravné riešenie - napr. tabuľu s informáciami, kde je najbližší zberný dvor alebo informáciu o pokutách, či umiestnenie koša alebo kamery.

Efektívnejšie odpratanie

Vďaka obsahu v hlásení budete vedieť, aká veľká je daná skládka, aký odpad obsahuje a ako je dostupná a tak môžete upratovanie efektívnejšie naplánovať, čo vám môže ušetriť čas aj peňažné prostriedky. Navyše si môžete nastaviť emailové notifikácie vďaka ktorým budete vždy informovaní.

Komunikácia s občanmi

V aplikácii si môže obec vytvoriť profil a následne skládky aktualizovať a tak občania budú vedieť, že sa zaujímate a skládky naozaj aj riešite

Podpora recyklácie

Užívatelia v aplikácii môžu vyhľadávať zberné miesta podľa veľkosti a typu odpadu. Aj vy môžete pridať informácie o košoch a zberných dvoroch v okolí a podporiť tak odpadové fungovanie obce

Zapojili sme sa do organizácie Upracme (si) Slovensko a Svetový čistiaci deň 2018

Dňa 15.9.2018 sa na Slovensku konalo podujatie Upracme (si) Slovensko. Podujatie je súčasťou globálnej iniciatívy World Cleanup Day (v preklade Svetový čistiaci deň). Do tejto globálnej akcie, konajúcej sa v jeden deň na celom svete prvýkrát v histórii, sa zapojilo viac ako 13 miliónov účastníkov v 144 krajinách sveta. Ďalších 11 krajín muselo upratovania odložiť kvôli zlému počasiu a hroziacim hurikánom či tajfúnom. Príbeh Svetového čistiaceho dňa začal v roku 2008 v Estónsku, kedy (vtedy ešte národné) hnutie Let’s Do It usporiadalo udalosť, ktorej sa zúčastnilo 50 000 obyvateľov a spoločne vyčistili za jeden deň celú krajinu. Počas desiatich rokov sa povedomie o tejto myšlienke rozšírilo do takmer 160 štátov sveta. Cieľom akcie je odpratať z ulíc a prírody odpad, ktorý tam nepatrí.

Upracme (si) Slovensko

nicatíva Upracme (si) Slovensko vznikla veľmi nedávno, len pred pár týždňami, keď sa tím nadšencov (Veronika Repiská, Lucia Kelnarová, Matej Kucek, Veronika Smažáková, Radovan Kramár, Peter Ďubek, Monika Čermáková a Eva Laciková a iní) rozhodol zapojiť do tohto globálneho hnutia. Za túto krátku dobu sa k nim pridalo viacero lokálnych organizátorov, a tak sa podujatie konalo približne v 24 miestach na Slovensku a to konkrétne v Banskej Štiavnici, Bratislave, Brezne, Cinobani, Hlohovci, Holíči, Hviezdoslavove, Kysuckom Novom Meste, Martine, Námestove, Nitre, Nových Zámkoch, Poprade, Rabči, Ružomberku, Senci, Snine, Stupave, Šahoch, Šútove, Trnave, Turanoch, v Zázrivej a Zvolene. Okrem skupinových akcií sme evidovali aj množstvo jednotlivcov, ktorí pozbierali odpad vo svojom okolí.

Na Slovensku sa zapojilo približne 550 dobrovoľníkov a vyzbieralo sa 3,8 ton odpadu. Zúčastnili sa aj deti aj dôchodcovia, jednotlivci aj skupinky kolegov, či kamarátov.

Podujatie bolo možné usporiadať za tak krátky čas aj vďaka partnerom pomáhajúcim s organizáciou ako Mother flower, tím TrashOut a Digitask , ktorí prispeli svojím časom a vedomosťami. S materiálnym vybavením a odvozom nám pomohli najmä partneri pôsobiaci v odpadovom sektore ako Redox , OLO , FCC a Brantner . Samozrejme chceme poďakovať aj zástupcom miest, ktorí veľmi ochotne akciu podporili a našim ostatným a mediálnym partnerom. Zároveň sme vďační aj všetkým účastníkom, ktorí sa zapojili a urobili naše Slovensko a niečo čistejším.

Evidencia problémových oblastí a nelegálneho odpadu

Problémové miesta boli pred akciou nahlasované prostredníctvom aplikácie TrashOut, ktorá je pôvodom zo Slovenska. TrashOut je zároveň aj partnerom samotnej globálnej akcie World Cleanup Day. Prostredníctvom tejto aplikácie bolo nahlásených takmer 45 tisíc skládok vo viac ako 110 krajinách. Na Slovensku bolo nahlásených vyše 6 tisíc, z toho 1000 je v aplikácii evidovaných ako vyčistených. Počas Upracme (si) Slovensko sme vyčistili 31 nelegálnych skládok len počas pár hodín spolu s množstvom iného drobného odpadu. Najväčšiu časť odpadu tvorili plasty - najmä fľaše a obaly z výrobkov. Našli sa aj pneumatiky, strešné nosiče, káble, umývadlo, či iné kuriozity.

Čo ďalej?

Záleží nám na našej rodnej zemi, na jej krásnej prírode, a preto by sme ju chceli spoločnými silami zbaviť odpadu, ktorý sa tu za roky ignorancie a ľahostajnosti nazhromaždil. Chceme sa prechádzať po čistých námestiach, parkoch, lúkach, či vyliezť napr. na Kriváň bez toho, aby sme okolo seba videli krabičky od cigariet, či vyhodené plechovky od piva. Recyklujeme málo a sme na chvoste spomedzi krajín Európskej únie. Uvedomujeme si, že čistiace podujatia nie sú riešením problému a máme v pláne sa venovať aj prevencii, či už prostredníctvom vzdelávania alebo iných aktivít. Ako dáta pomáhajú vyčistiť čierne skládky

TrashOut je nástroj na mapovanie a monitorovanie nelegálnych skládok po celom svete. Často dostávame otázku, ako TrashOut prispieva k čistejšej planéte, kedže my sami skládky nečistíme. Odpoveďou je, že poskytujeme dáta správnym ľuďom a organizáciám, ktoré s nimi následne pracujú a takto prispievame k ich rýchlejšiemu odprataniu.

Predstavte si, že kráčate v lese a nájdete veľkú hromadu odpadkov. To sa vám samozrejme nepáči, ale čo môžete urobiť? Komu zavoláte? Ako opíšeme obsah a veľkosť skládky? A najťažšia časť, ako vysvetlíte, kde sa skládka nachádza? TrashOut rieši práve tento problém. Dovoľuje hocikomu rýchlo a jednoducho nahlásiť skládku cez mobilnú aplikáciu a následne poskytuje informácie občanom, mimovládnym organizáciám a obciam, aby mohli efektívnejšie zorganizovať odpratanie nahlásenej skládky.

Ako funguje celý proces krok po kroku

1. krok: nahlásenie

Hocikto môže nahlásiť čiernu skládku prostredníctvom mobilnej aplikácie TrashOut. Urobí fotku, veľmi jednoducho vyberie veľkosť skládky pomocou ikoniek, vyberie obsah skládky podľa typu odpadu a aplikácia automaticky pridá GPS súradnice. Táto skládka je týmto nahlásená, čo znamená, že je v systéme TrashOut.

2. krok: odber notifikácií

Proaktívni občania, environmentálne organizácie a obce sa môžu prihlásiť na odber pravidelných e-mailových upozornení na zmeny v konkrétnej oblasti, ktorú sa rozhodnú sledovať. Môžete si vybrať, či vás zaujíma časť mesta, vaša dedina alebo celá krajina. Raz za deň, týždeň alebo mesiac podľa výberu dostanú všetci ľudia a organizácie e-mail so všetkými novo nahlásenými skládkami, aktualizovanými skládkami a vyčistenými skládkami v oblasti, ktorá ich zaujíma. Napr. si nastavíte, že sledujete Banskú Bystricu raz za mesiac. Raz za mesiac vám príde email v ktorom budú fotky skládok a ich adresy. Teraz všetky subjekty sledujúce danú oblasť vedia o aktuálnom stave a môžu konať na základe týchto informácií. Čím viac ľudí a organizácií vie o tomto probléme a o konkrétnych skládkach, tým rýchlejšie sa nimi bude niekto zaoberať a budú odpratané.

3.krok: vyčistenie

Obec alebo nezisková organizácia, či aktívny občan sa rozhodne zorganizovať vyčistenie skládky. Organizátori vďaka TrashOut vedia presne kde sa skládka nachádza, čo je jej obsahom a vedia sa teda pripraviť lepšie. Vedia, či potrebujú objednať veľký kontajner, koľko ľudí potrebujú na odpratanie, či tam je nebezpečný odpad a iné. Priamo z aplikácie môžu zorganizovať čistiace podujatie, označiť ktoré skládky budú čistené, vyplniť údaje o tom, čo už majú a čo majú priniesť účastníci. Pokiaľ takéto podujatie existuje, používatelia ho uvidia priamo v mobilnej aplikácii odkiaľ sa môžu na podujatie pridať.

4.krok: aktualizácia statusu na "vyčistená"

Po vyčistení skládku aktualizujú ako vyčistenú. Prípadne ju aktualizuje niekto, kto si všimne, že už tam nie je. Hurá!

5.krok: informovanie o vyčistení

Ľudia a organizácie s nastavenými pravidelnými upozorneniami dostanú informáciu, že skládka bola vyčistená. Užívatelia, ktorí túto skládku nahlásili alebo aktualizovali uvidia jej nový status aj v mobilnej aplikácii v sekcii nedávne aktivity a zároveň dostanú push notifikáciu.

Týmto spôsobom sledujeme problematické oblasti, poskytujeme údaje o obsahu a aktuálnom stave skládok a evidujeme ich počet a pomer vyčistených a nevyčistených skládok. Tieto údaje a vizualizácia pomáhajú miestnym samosprávam preukázať, že robia svoju prácu dobre, mimovládnym organizáciám pôsobiacim v oblasti životného prostredia môžu napomôcť získať finančnú alebo inú podporu na svoju činnosť a médiá môžu získať informácie o lokálnom dianí.

Práve vďaka rozšíreniu TrashOut do celého sveta sme sa rozhodli dorobiť nové funkcionality, ktoré prispejú k čistejšej a udržatelnej planéte pre všetkých. Nahlasovanie skládok

Pridali sme možnosť zvoliť pri nahlasovaní dostupnosť skládky. Môžete zaznačiť, či je skládka dostupná autom, či je v vo vode, jaskyni alebo, či na jej upratanie treba špecializované prostriedky. Táto informácia slúži obciam a organizátorom čistiacich podujatí v lepšej organizácii a manažmente zdrojov.

Nedávne aktivity

Zistili sme, že vám, používateľom, chýbali informácie, čo sa so skládkou stalo po jej nahlásení. Táto sekcia obsahuje informácie o vami nahlásených skládkach a zároveň o ich aktualizáciách urobených inými užívateľmi, aby ste boli vždy v obraze.

Každý používateľ, teda občania, neziskové organizácie aj obce sa môže prihlásiť o odber emailových notifikácií o oblasti, ktorá ho zaujíma. Môžete si zvoliť napr. určitú časť mesta, celé mesto alebo kraj a dostávať notifikácie raz za deň, týždeň alebo mesiac. Email obsahuje informácie o nových nahlásených skládkach, aktualizovaných skládkach a vyčistených skládkach. Nechceme vynucovať upratanie, chceme proaktívne informovať. Čistiace podujatia

Pre organizátorov sme vylepšili možnosť organizovať podujatia a pre užívateľov sme pripravili sekciu najbližšie podujatia. Priamo v aplikácii uvidíte podujatia, ktoré sú vo vašom okolí a konajú sa počas najbližšieho mesiaca. Organizátori môžu vytvoriť podujatie z detailu ktorejkoľvek skládky, zaznačiť miesto stretnutia, podať informáciu o tom, čo už majú, prípadne čo majú účastníci priniesť a označiť, ktoré skládky sa budú čistiť.

How Data Contribute to Cleaner Planet

TrashOut is a tool for mapping and monitoring illegal dumps all around the world. We are often asked, who do we contribute to a cleaner planet if we do not clean those dumps ourselves. The answer is we provide data to right people and organizations.

Imagine you are walking in the forest and you find a big pile of trash. You do not like it, obviously, but what can you do? Whom will you call? How will you describe the contents and size? And the worst part, how will you explain where exactly the trash is located? There is a need for a tool that provides this information to citizens, NGOs, and municipalities so they can organize cleanups efficiently.

How Data Contribute to Cleaner Planet Step by Step

1.step: Report

Someone reports illegal dump through TrashOut mobile application. Takes a picture, chooses the size of the dump very easily with icons, chooses contents and application will add GPS coordinates automatically. This dump is now reported, meaning it is in TrashOut system.

2. step: E-mail Notification

Citizens, environmental organizations, and municipalities can subscribe to regular email notifications about a specific area they choose to monitor. You can choose the part of the city, or the whole country to watch over! Once per day, week or month these proactive individuals and organizations receive an email with all newly reported dumps, updated dumps and cleaned dumps in the area of their interests. Now they know and can act on this information. More people and organizations know about this issue, faster it will be dealt with.

3.step: Cleanup

Some municipality or active organization decides to organize the cleanup. Now they know how many people, trucks, bags they need and where to go. Directly from the application, they can organize a cleaning event, identify which landfills will be cleaned, fill in data on what they already have and what the participants should bring. If such an event exists, users will see it directly in the mobile app from where they can join the event and help to clean up their neighborhood

4.step: Update of Dump

Once the dump is cleanup up, its status can be updated to cleaned. Hura!

5.step: E-mail and push notification about new status

People and organizations with regular notifications will be updated about the new status of this dump. If you reported or updated this dump, you will also see this new activity in your mobile application in section recent activities and receive push notification with the information that status of your report changed.

This way we can track problematic areas, we have data about contents and about the current status. These data and visualization then help local municipalities to prove that they do their job properly, to environmental NGOs to raise more financial and other support for their activities and to media to showcase local activities.

TrashOut project started in 2012 with a vision of clean Slovakia, small country in Europe. We kept the flow of reporting the dump, but we added a choice to report accessibility of the dump, for example if it is under water, if it is accessible by car, if it is in a case or if there is a need for specialized cleanup. This information serves organizers of cleaning events.

Just search by waste type and waste size, and the app will show you your closest option for recycling bin or collection centre with information such as its location, opening hours, contact, etc. Everyone can add collection centre and recycling bin from our web app at admin.trashout.ngo. Go and add recycling points in your neighborhood, so others around you will dispose their waste the right way.

Recent Activities

We've found that you, users, were missing information about what happened with illegal dump after it was reported. Section recent activities contains information about your activities such as reported and updated illegal dumps but also activities of other connected with your activities. So let's say you report a dump. You will see it in recent activities in your mobile app. In one month someone noticed this dump was cleaned and updates it status as cleaned. You will see it in the section of recent activities, so now you will be always updated about the status of dumps you follow.

Regular Email Notifications from Area You Care About

Users - citizens, non-profit organizations, and municipalities can subscribe to e- mail notifications about the area they are interested in to watch and monitor. You can choose, for example, a certain part of the city, the entire city or region, even whole country and subscribe to receive notification once a day, week or month. This e- mail notification contains information about new reported illegal dumps, updated dumps and cleaned dumps. You can add areas of your interest from your profile at admin.trashout.ngo.

Cleaning Events

We have improved the way how to organize cleaning event through TrashOut platform.Organizer can choose which dumps will be cleaned, date and place of cleaning event, what tools they have and what attendees need to bring. On the other hand users will see upcoming cleaning actions and can join directly from the application. After the event TrashOut will ask joined users to provide feedback and pictures, so organizer can have statistics about cleaning action.

In the future, we plan to create materials for citizens, communities and organizations on how to efficiently create cleanup action, how to recycle waste and other environments. Go check out new features in TrashOut mobile app and web app at admin.trashout.ngo .
